More to the point, my current DeviID (and I'm so happy to finally have a new one) brings up something I'm greatly looking forward to... Nintendo's next console, the Wii. Some of you might hate the name, and some of you might not know what it is... but I'm greatly looking forward to [finally] having new video games.
For years now, Video Games have become this... Thing... They've become something that you either are into and get, are someone who buys them up due to Hype, hates video games, or doesn't know anything about them at all. People who don't know anything about them at all are mostly in government, from what I can tell.
The thing is, and I've been saying this for years... this isn't some Nintendo Fanboy thing coming through... Video Games are, in a way, too complicated. I can play myself a game like Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, or Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, or City of Heroes, Tony Hawk, Super Smash Bros., or any other game and say to myself that I know what I'm doing. I'm enjoying myself and having some fun...
Then, I try and get someone else into it...
Like any hobby a person enjoys, you'll often want to get your friends involved. The trick here is, at this point, when I try and tell a friend how to play any of the games mentioned above... fun as they might be... they have to many functions... to many buttons.
Control Schemes seem easy to me because I've been playing Video Games for almost all of my life... 20 years or so, starting with my very first Nintendo. But even a game like the new Prince of Persia ones (which, in my head, require three buttons), takes to long for me explain to a friend how to do. And, hell, let's not mention games like Smackdown Vs RAW, OMG.
I like games that, regardless of their depth, have easy control schemes to understand. One of my reasons for enjoying my GameCube so much was because the controller fit my hand, was comfortable to hold... and Nintendo encouraged companies to make controls with what they had. It allowed for buttons to do more than one function, and that's the way I like it.
Smash Bros. is, basically, two buttons. Perfect Dark, though and FPS, had a Quick Select menu for the guns if you held down reload... Prince of Persia, like I said, has Wall-Run, Jump, Attack, and Throw... and all those can be done in combinations of each other. These games, and ones that are on the DS, are easier to control because you can do more with less. I can't tell you the number of PS2 games that threw me off because Reverse was a different button than Break in a Racing Game.
But, beyond controls, there's the games themselves. Games, really, have lowered in overall quality. You can't even enjoy a certain series before it caves in on itself. Look and SSX: On Tour, and Burnout Revenge (both happen to be handled by EA), and... for the sake of EA-Bashing, Sim City 4. Each one of these games had good points, but were not nearly as good as they could have been.
Take EA out, and you're left with games like the Smackdown series, which I can now compare to Def Jam: Fight for NY (which rocks, so hard). Or, how about Dynasty Warriors... I thought the games were fun, but they never got any better and the rezz distance always stayed bad. It wouldn't be hard to make that game even better... memorable, even. And, on top of that, what about all these half-finished MMO's that get released (like Star Wars Galaxies, The Matrix Online, etc.)? Why do we have these games come out that could be better and are not? Are my standards to high?
No. They aren't to high, and Nintendo is about to prove it to me. Sink or Swim, style. Their next System will give us all a new way to play, to actually interact. They aren't pimping frame-rate dropping 16:9 or how big their harddrive is, or that you can surf the web or play HD-DVD's or BlueRay, or any of that other shit. Once again, Nintendo is in it for the games. Less expensive system, higher quality games... and finally, after so many years of people copying the original NES controller and on down the line... a new way to play with the Wii-mote.
There are so many little features of the system, but the one I'll mention before I stop typing is the Virtual Console. You'll be able to play Downloaded NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Turbo Graphics 16, and N64 games... not to mention the console itself will take GameCube disks too. Now, I can go back and start getting older games I'm missing even to this day... like River City Ransom or Mighty Final Fight (both I missed), or the SNES Star Wars games I didn't get to finish, or how about getting to play Top Gear Rally 2 again... or Excitebike 64... one can only hope.
So, this Journal is not so much a Journal. It's another open discussion, so feel free to reply with your hopes and thoughts... even if all you have to say is X-Box 360 is the greatest thing since Pizza, PS3 will pwn all, government should be stricker with game sales, or Grand Theft Auto is only a driving game... I don't care... I need some discussion going on here, guys.
See you in the Future,

This coming from a girl who is a.) Really picky about her games,
and b.) not much into gaming, and is currently getting introduced
to the idea... The Nintendo Wii sounds like a good idea. Personally,
I'm an old-fashioned kind of person. The old Nintendo and Sega
games were always my favorite, save for one or two regular
PlayStation games (like Legend of Dragoon). Hell, I still go online
and look up the old, classic Tetris game and play the hell out of
it. I love that game. It was a mix of puzzle and strategy,
along with a really catchy tune. What's not to love?
So, along with this new system, all the old Nintendo and Sega
games will be available again. I've heard a lot of rumors about
the new controllers for the Nintendo Wii, and personally, it doesn't
sound that bad. Maybe a little complicated, but not bad. I like
trying new things if they happen to catch my interest.
One game that I'm hoping and praying (ok, maybe not literally
praying, God has more important things to do than to worry
about what kind of game I want to come out for the new system)
that they'll re-release ToeJam & Earl. That was one kickass
game.
I'm hoping that the Nintendo Wii will rise above my expectations.
I've been promising my little brother a Nintendo and all our old
games for months, but ever since I heard about this new system,
I've been holding off on getting it. If this one is going to be better,
and is going to have all the games from our childhood, I'd much
rather get him that. I know he'd like it a hell of a lot more. I hate
having to wait to find out, but I'd rather wait and see him happy
than to get him an old Nintendo system that might not even last
for two months.
I have to agree in that a lot of games have gone down in quality
when it comes to actual gameplay. Graphics on the mini-vids
during the transition between scenes and stuff in plotline are
pretty for some of the games coming out. The only ones I can
tell that have gone down when it comes to graphics would be
the racing games. 'Fraid to say it, but that's just my personal
opinion. Take it or leave it.
I also have to agree that I like controls that take little to pull off
nice moves in combat, and have combinations. I'm not talking
about mashing one button that carries you through the whole
game, that's just too easy. No, I'm talking about maybe three
buttons, tops. Not including the actual controler and/or analog
stick. When there's a controler that has four buttons, and four
shoulder-buttons, all of which can do something if you punch
them in the right order... It's just too much for me. I can't keep
tabs on that many buttons and what they do. It's frustrating,
and could easily be remedied.
Something else that I miss... Controllers that actually make you
feel like you're in the game, or viewpoints that make the screen
look like you're in the seat of the car, or you're the person
fighting. There might be games coming out with those views,
but I haven't seen any personally. Anyone that has, please let
me know about them so I can play!
But my overall opinion is this... Nintendo looks like they're about
to do what I've been saying the makers of all game systems
should have done a long time ago. Put their brains, and their
materials together! Make a system that can run more than just
one type of game. I don't want to have to waste my money
buying a game system every year just to play a game that I'm
interested in when it comes out. If they make a console that
can run all brands of games, they won't lose money. Just use
the rest of your skills and vast knowledge on how to improve
the games themselves. I assure you, they will sell,
and it's more likely that more profit will be made, rather than
putting everything into a PlayStation3, with a whole bunch of
additions that aren't needed, for $600 that very few are willing
to spend, no matter how pretty the games are.
But again, that's just my output. How about you guys?

In relation to the buttons.. I think sega had it down to a T. 3 buttons (actually 6 but it wasnt complicated either) I like a good combonation to test how fast I can process the motions. But I also like something that wont make me throw the controller at my opponent in frustration.
many people are, As I my self am doing, Going back to the old ways of gaming. Not so far as pong but. Ive seen a large sum of people hunt down nintendo and sega and even playstation and N64. As though theyre losing the feel for games that look real but end real quick.
Im not suggesting 16 bit life style.. but for "zelda links awakening" as an example. For graphins of small ammount... that game took me a good while to finish. I hope to find more games with decent graphics and a long story line. Final fantasy seems to be the only game Ive personally noticed doing this for all their series.
Its all in how you like to play. With me need for speed underground was nice for taking gran torismos working on cars and mixing it with street racers. But Im just as happy with the old Quake 2 and and diablo 2 because while the graphics dont improove beyond a spacific point. the game itself lasts a ling time and to this day both D2 and Q2 are very popular.
For the time being this is all I can say. Thank you for your time into reading this.

Not that PlayStation Controllers are very reliable anyway... it seems like I need to get a new one every other year, PSX or PS2. If I'm not mistaken, PS3 controls are all wireless... so you can't even use your older controllers at all. But still... my controllers should work for at least the full life of the system +1 year, I think... at the very least.
(and to those who look at this and dismiss it as a "fanboy" comment, screw you. I'm only telling it how it is.)

Walk the line carefully, my friend... for one sign of "Fanboy" weakness, and those 'other' Players will be all over you.
I kid, I kid...
